Top Ten Financial Podcasts

For those interested in news and education on personal finance and investing topics, I have compiled a list of financial podcasts that I have found to be useful and entertaining. These podcasts are available via both Apple and Google Podcasts. For those new to podcasts, the following article from the Houston Chronicle may be helpful: Podcasts 101: How to find them and how to listen.

(I am not advocating any specific advice, recommendations or products/services promoted by any of these podcasts or associated web sites. I would use these podcast as resource, but consider additional sources and your own due diligence.)

WSJ What’s News

The Wall Street Journal publishes a number of targeted topic podcasts. The ‘WSJ What’s News’ Podcast provides a very good brief of current financial news with AM and PM updates lasting about ten minutes. This podcast is great for short commutes. The format is no nonsense and to the point.

Wall Street Breakfast

Wall Street Breakfast is published by the financial web site www.seekingalpha.com. According to SA, Wall Street Breakfast is Seeking Alpha’s flagship daily business news summary. This is the audio version of their daily one-page summary that gives you a rapid overview of the day’s key financial news. Daily updates are posted early each morning and last 6 – 7 minutes.

Bloomberg Surveillance

According to www.bloomberg.com, this podcast ‘brings insight on global markets and top business stories of the day’. The podcast is a short version of the Bloomberg Surveillance show. This show includes both news and in depth discussion on specific topics. The show includes guest interviews with some of the most intelligent and influential players from academia, industry and government. Shows typically run 30 minutes or so.

Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer

‘Mad Money with Jim Cramer’ is a show that runs on CNBC evenings. Jim is a former hedge fund manager. The show focuses on investing in individual stocks. What I like in particular about the show is Cramer’s focus educational focus. It’s quirky and depending on your point of few, entertaining. In terms of his investment philosophy, he makes a reasonably good case for combining index funds together with individual stocks in portfolios. The format of the show includes caller questions, interviews with CEOs / guests and Jim’s opening monologue on the topic the day. Podcasts run about 45 minutes.

Motley Fool Money

Motley Fool Money is a weekly radio program featuring a team of analysts from the Motley Fool (www.fool.com) discussing business news, investment stories and ‘an inside look at stocks on our radar’. Shows run about 40 minutes. This show tends to have a bit more depth than the fast paced Mad Money. I like the format with multiple analysts with varying viewpoints. Shows run about 40 minutes.

Dave Ramsey

Dave Ramsey is one of the biggest radio personalities in personal finance. He tends to focus on getting out of debt and saving for retirement. The talk show program includes callers asking for advice and sharing their personal experience. Podcast titles have included: ‘Is it Smarter to Pay off College Loans or Start Investing?’, ‘What’s the Best Way to Save for a House?’ and ‘How the Current Job Market Will Help You Get Hired’. Shows run about 40 minutes.

The Clark Howard Podcast

Clark Howard is also a nationally syndicated radio show host. His show called, ‘Clark Howard Show’ airs daily. Clark’s format is similar to Dave Ramsey with a bit more of an emphasis on consumer issues such as consumer rip-offs or how to get the best deal on products and services. A sample of recent podcast topics include: student loan scams, do your own eye exam, best fast food restaurants and cashing out 401k plans. Shows run about 40 minutes.

Journey to Launch

This podcast is from Jamila Souffrant. Jamilia is a Certified Financial Education Instructor (CFEI) and money coach. The subtitle of this podcast is ‘launching you to financial freedom’. This is a newer podcast using an interview format that may be of interest to younger people that are working toward reaching their wealth goals. Recent topics have included: ‘The What, Why and How of The Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) Movement’, ‘Getting Over Analysis Paralysis’ and ‘Bravely Tackle Debt and Take Control of Your Finances w/ Kara Perez’.

Investing Insights from Morningstar

This podcasts comes from Morningstar.com. Morningstar provides investment research to institutional and retail clients covering stocks, exchange-traded funds, mutual funds and more. You may be familiar with Morningstar’s ‘star’ ratings for investment funds. This podcast is usually 20 – 45 minutes and is published weekly. Recent podcast titles have included: ‘A Midyear Portfolio Checkup in Five Easy Steps’, ‘Dividends, TIPS, and Tax Deductions’, and ‘Facebook, Alphabet, and Stock Funds’. This podcast is one of the best available for investor education.

BiggerPockets

This is one of the top real estate podcasts out there. The podcast focuses on those who want to build and manage a real estate portfolio. This weekly podcast has an interview format and runs about an hour. A few recent titles include: ‘3 Reasons Multifamily Rentals Might Be the Perfect Investment with Paul Moore’,’75 Rental Units in Their Early 30s with Jason and Carrie Harris’, and ‘Using Other People’s Money to Build Your Real Estate Empire with Matt Faircloth’.
